Naledi Local Municipality

Infrastructure development projects implemented by the Naledi Local Municipality include;

  • Construction of a water reservoir in Wepener that will result in the holding capacity in this area being increased to 1.5 ML. The project was jointly funded through MIG and the former Motheo District Municipality.
  • Paving of 2.98km of road in Dewetsdorp, Morajaneng to provide improved access to Morajaneng Township.
  • Upgrading of 710 metres Martinus Road in Van Stadensrus
  • Construction of 1400m Paving of Internal Street in Van Stadensrus

The implementation of other infrastructure development projects include the following;

  • Construction of a 1 km low-level bridge in Wepener
  • Upgrading of internal streets in Dewetsdorp, Morojaneng
  • Resuscitation of 4 dysfunctional boreholes in Wepener
  • Resuscitation of 7 dysfunctional boreholes in Dewetsdorp
  • Resuscitation of 4 dysfunctional boreholes in Vanstadensrus
  • Install of elevated water tank and interlinking pipeline in Dewetsdorp
  • Upgrading of waste water treatment works in Vanstadensrus
  • Waterborne Sanitation- Relocation of Raw Sewer Pump Station and connection of 150 households, Dewetsdorp
  • Electrification of outstanding sites in Dewetsdorp and Wepener
  • Eradication of illegal refuse dumps and rehabilitation of dumping sites to community parks
  • Construction of houses in all three towns to address housing backlog

Provincial government

The Free State provincial government prioritizes the investment in infrastructure development programmes to be implemented in the Naledi municipality and continues to align its planning with the respective needs of the local government sector. The provincial Department of Human Settlements initiated the construction of 100 houses in Van Stadensrus whilst the provincial Department of Police, Roads and Transport undertook the construction of the Naledi Transport Centre in Wepener.  The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation completed a multi-purpose sport court was handed over to the municipality and community of VanStadensrus and a community gymnasium was officially opened in Wepener /Qibing during July 2011.

Focus on Vanstadensrus

The Free State provincial government and the Naledi Local Municipality targeted Vanstadensrus as one of the localities where the Operation Hlasela-philosophy has been put into action. This resulted in the construction of 100 houses (measuring 50sqr meters each containing bathroom with bath, basin and toilet) in the small rural community. Three different types of houses have been built for the community. In addition, 700m of the Marthinus Road has been tarred, a pedestrian walkway next to the road has been paved and side drainage is at completion stage. Significant progress has been made to complete the internal roads of 1400m and the leveling of kerbs. The upgrade of sport facilities and construction of hard courts are also in progress.
